As the women one-by-one snag rich English husbands, they quickly find that married life is not all that it’s cracked up to be. The aristocratic world of the British upper class is filled with misery, sadness, affairs, illness, and more. But the ‘Booty’ girls are determined to find their happily ever after, no matter the cost.
The movie’s beautiful cinematography and costumes help to elevate the story, as does the excellent cast. But the film’s story is too melodramatic and overly sentimental, and it fails to engage the viewer emotionally. It is still a fun watch, and a great way to see Yul Brynner in a non-action role. Olive Films’ Blu-ray restoration of this VistaVision production looks spectacular and features a rousing music score by Elmer Bernstein. This is a must-see for fans of classic Hollywood cinema.

Later, Maggie Wadey wrote the screenplay for a 1993 TV miniseries, which was filmed in the United States and starred Carla Gugino, Mira Sorvino, Rya Kihlsted, Alison Elliott, and Michael Culkin.
While the miniseries had its moments, it largely drew on Wharton’s themes without really capturing her spirit or energy. As a result, the characters seemed self-consciously posed and mockingly staged, and the pirate action was rudimentary at best.
